Factors Influencing Home-range Size of Female Florida Black Bears

چکیده
The manner in which space is utilized by animals is influenced by several factors, including habitat quality and the distribution and abundance of resources. We used 4 years (2000–2003) of radiotelemetry data to investigate the space-use pattern of female Florida black bears (Ursus americanus floridanus) in the Ocala National Forest and an adjacent residential community of Lynne, north-central Florida. Annual home-range size (95% fixed kernel density estimator) ranged from 3.8 km to 126.9 km, and averaged (6 SE) 24.2 6 3.55 km. Home ranges were largest during 2000 when a drought led to a forest-wide mast failure, suggesting that abundance of food resources can substantially influence space-use pattern. Home-range sizes during autumn (19.92 6 4.59 km) were substantially larger than during summer (8.26 6 0.99 km). Although annual home-range size did not differ between the 2 study sites, home ranges in summer were smaller in Lynne (5.30 6 1.01 km) than in Ocala National Forest (9.82 6 1.29 km), whereas home ranges in autumn were twice as large in Lynne (35.76 6 13.91 km) as in Ocala National Forest (13.24 6 1.80 km). We suggest that site-specific differences in the size of seasonal home range are due to differences in habitat characteristics and the degree of habitat fragmentation between the 2 study sites.

Whitebark Pine, Population Density, and Home-Range Size of Grizzly Bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem
Changes in life history traits of species can be an important indicator of potential factors influencing populations. For grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE), recent decline of whitebark pine (WBP; Pinus albicaulis), an important fall food resource, has been paired with a slowing of population growth following two decades of robust population increase. These ...

We investigated reproductive ecology and cub survival of Florida black bears (Ursus americanus floridanus) in Ocala National Forest and the adjacent residential area of Lynne, Florida, USA, 1999–2003. We documented production of 81 cubs from 39 litters. Average litter size was 2.08 6 0.11 (SE) cubs. The mean age of first reproduction was 3.25 6 0.27 years. Excluding females that reproduced in c...
متن کاملDoes Genetic Relatedness Influence Space Use Pattern? a Test on Florida Black Bears
It has been hypothesized that, in species exhibiting natal philopatry, genetically related individuals would have home ranges closer to each other than those of unrelated individuals. Using radiotelemetry (2001–2003) and genetic data from 35 female Florida black bears (Ursus americanus floridanus), we tested the hypothesis that genetic relatedness among individuals influenced the spatial organi...
متن کاملHome Range Size Variation in Female Arctic Grizzly Bears Relative to Reproductive Status and Resource Availability
The area traversed in pursuit of resources defines the size of an animal's home range. For females, the home range is presumed to be a function of forage availability. However, the presence of offspring may also influence home range size due to reduced mobility, increased nutritional need, and behavioral adaptations of mothers to increase offspring survival. Here, we examine the relationship be...
